VILNO
The Pointed Gate in Vilno. In the middle aged Vilno it was a custom that in the tower with an alcove, over the gate sacred paintings were placed. At the very beginning Vilno had five city gates, e.g. Miednik’s Gate (the name comes from the road leading to the city of Miednik). The gate is also known as the Pointed Gate from the name of the part of the south suburb, which was called the Pointed End. |

KOVNO
The first notes come from 1361. In the 13th century the castle was built there so as to protect the Lithuanians from Teutonic Knights’ conquests. However, the castle was conquered many times, e.g. in 1362. In 1384 Teutonic Knights built a castle which still exists. The castle was supposed to be the base for other conquests, especially to conquer Vilno. |
