The
unicameral Lithuanian parliament, the Seimas, has 141 members who
are elected to four-year terms. About half of the members of this
legislative body are elected in single constituencies (71), and the
other half (70) are elected in a nationwide vote by proportional
representation. A party must receive at least 5% of the national
vote to be represented in the Seimas.
The Lithuanian Seimas
plays a dmoninant role in the political system of the country:
it administers the elections of
the president, but it has aslo the power to remove him or her from
the position, regardless of the opinion of the Consitutional Court,
qualified majority 3/5 - such impeachment took place in 2004
of the President Paksas, who was replaced with the former President Adamkus
(eleceted in the elections). |

government, and is chosen by the Lithuanian parlliament.
