the President of Lithuania

 

The unicameral Lithuanian parliament, the Seimas, has 141 members who are elected to four-year terms. About half of the members of this legislative body are elected in single constituencies (71), and the other half (70) are elected in a nationwide vote by proportional representation. A party must receive at least 5% of the national vote to be represented in the Seimas.

The Lithuanian Seimas plays a dmoninant role in the political system of the country: it administers the elections of the president, but it has aslo the power to remove him or her from the position, regardless of the opinion of the Consitutional Court, qualified majority 3/5 - such impeachment took place in 2004  of the President Paksas, who was replaced with the former President Adamkus (eleceted in the elections).

The Prime Minister of Lithuania is the head of the executive arm of Lithuania's government, and is chosen by the Lithuanian parlliament.

The Lithuanian head of state is the president, elected directly for a five-year term, maximum two terms consecutively.
