On 13th January we met Mr. Jarosław Baciński, the director of the delegature of Stateowned Service for the Protection of Monuments in Ełk, who comes from Wąbrzeźno. He wrote few books, among others "The castle of the bishops of Chełmno in Wąbrzeźno". He told us some interesting things about that castle.
The reason for choosing that topic was, as Mr. Jarosław says, very prosaic- namely it was his "internal need", besides "(...) that topic wasn"t used up and in some way it didn"t give satisfaction. Before the war Mr. Stańczewski wrote a book about the castle in Wąbrzeźno, Mr. Szlachcikowski wrote something too, but those investigations weren"t professional, they were amateur (...)". Mr. Baciński is a restorer of the monuments, he finished studies at the Faculty of Arts on UMK in Toruń and his specialization, which is the architecture of the middle ages and modern times, imposed in some way the topic of his work. From the conversation with Mr. Jarosław, we found out many interesting things, for example that castle in Wąbrzeźno was the place of meetings for many important for those times people, such as bishop Jan Dantyszek or Big Master Teutonic, "(...)important people often visited each other (...)". In the long history of our town intervention of Swedish army in 18th century was noticed. Today our castle isn"t in a very good condition, because bishops of Chełmno left it and moved to a new court in Lubawa. The castle, left without any care, was in decay. Inhabitants of Wąbrzeźno contributed to that fact- they were taking bricks from the castle. The castle in Wąbrzeźno, which is forgotten or recognized as not being worth any attention, is a very passionatic subject. We recommend Mr. Baciński"s book ("The castle of the bishops of Chełmno in Wąbrzeźno" to everyone who wants to know more about the history of our castle. |
